UNDERSTANDING THE TIME

I truly believe that most Americans are asleep at the wheel…as we are headed toward a cliff, Thelma-and-Louise style, going 90 miles an hour.

If you really understood how America is hanging by a thread, I wonder if you would wake up then. Would it be too late, though? Is it already?

Do you care or do you want to sleep through the plunge into death? Which is it, America? What are you going to do to save your country.

This past Christmas season I watched, “The Sound of Music,” as I have hundreds of times before. But this year I was, unfortunately, struck at the vivid similarities between what was happening in Austria at that time, and what is happening now in the United States.

While Captain von Trapp and his new wife were on their honeymoon, Uncle Max, wishing to capitalize on the singing talents of the von Trapp children, entered them into the local Vienna Music Festival. While there at practice, the newly appointed regional Nazi came up to Uncle Max and snapped out some orders. When he walked away the children asked why the man was so angry. And Uncle Max replied, “Everyone is angry these days. You see, the thing to do these days is just to get along with everybody.” Later, Max Detweiler said to Captain von Trapp, “At least the armistice (the Austrian capitulation to the Nazis) was peaceful.” To which the Captain looked at him like he was crazy and said, “Honestly, Max, sometimes I just don’t know who you are!”

After all these years of watching that movie, this was the first time I saw those similarities. How sad.

And honestly, I feel like Captain von Trapp singing “Edelweiss” right now.

Bless my homeland forever.

What time is it, America? Almost, if not already, too late.
